Burke was natural within Houston, Texas but grew up on the Texas-Louisiana gulf coast. He attended Southwestern Louisiana Institute and the University of Missouri, receiving a BA & MA from either the latter. He has worked at a wide kind of jobs across the years, including working in the oil business, as a newsman, as an English teacher & caseworker.

Burke & his married woman, Pearl, split their period between Missoula, Montana and New Iberia, Louisiana. His girl, Alafair Burke, is too the mystery novelist.
